On October 30 2022, Harriet Tubman National Historical Park (NHP) is thrilled to present a special performance by the Dorothy Cotton Jubilee Singers.  

This free concert will be held in the historic and beautiful Auburn Junior High School Auditorium at 191 Franklin Street, Auburn New York 13021. Concert begins at 2 PM. Seating begins at 1:30 PM 

In honor of the 200th anniversary of Harriet Tubman’s birth, this special group will perform for the Auburn community in Harriet Tubman’s chosen hometown. The Dorothy Cotton Jubilee Singers are dedicated to preserving the formal, concert-style “Negro Spiritual,” including a selection of songs from Tubman’s lifetime and familiar to her as a conductor on the Underground Railroad. The performance will include narration about the hidden meanings, history, and significance of these songs to enslaved Africans of the era—and their enduring significance to the struggle for racial justice. 

The Dorothy Cotton Jubilee Singers is a group of community singers in Ithaca, founded and directed by Baruch Whitehead, associate professor of music education at Ithaca College. The group is named after Dorothy Cotton, an Ithaca resident and civil rights pioneer who worked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. when she served as education director for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Cotton passed away in 2018.
